Darth Vader is one of the top, if not the top, villains of all time. While the look and voice of the character make him so iconic, his actually appearances in the original trilogy aren't all that great outside of Empire Strikes Back. The best Vader has always been from the stories outside of the movies and Kieron Gillen's Darth Vader run is at the top of that list. Gillen tells the story of what happened between the destruction of the first Death Star in A New Hope and the lead up to Empire Strikes Back. We see a Vader that has lost the confidence of the Emperor who seeks to see if he can replace Vader as well as Vader's interest in the young rebel pilot, Luke Skywalker.

This series also introduces us to new characters such as Doctor Aphra and the murderous bot duo of Triple Zero and Beetee.  If you were ever curious as to what happened between Episode IV and Episode V and what makes Vader such a scary guy, Gillen's 25 issues on Vader are just what you'll want to read.
