Ben is Back Spoiler Review: Julia Roberts Plays the “Brave” Clueless Mother of a Drug Addict


Kriss, Ro and Brandon have a lot to say about Ben is Back. This seems to really be the year of white people being shitty parents and white kids being even shittier kids. On the surface Julia Roberts plays the loving, caring mother of a son struggling with his recovery from drug abuse. But in reality, her character is clearly part of the problem and enabling her son.

We discuss our disconnect with this movie as black critics because we're tired of seeing this type of movie which is seeping in white privilege and no real consequences. To be fair, this film is much better than Beautiful Boy at showing the more seedier things drug addicts (and those that enable them) go through. At the same time, it's hard not to feel like Courtney Vance's character in this film and go "If he was black...."
