The film looks great and does have some "jump-out-of-seat" moments but is plagued by a lack of attention to details when it comes to developing the story and the characters

Alex Garland's Annihilation is hitting theaters soon and while it's getting great reviews, it's definitely not going to be a hit with most audiences. The film thinks it's smarter than it really is, focuses so much on looking pretty and being mysterious that it ends up being really dumb. I get it, "In order to create something new, you have to destroy (annihilate)" and there's plenty of symbolism in the film. But there's also a lack of attention played to details. Also, from what I've read its nothing like the book as Garland only read the first of the trilogy of novels and so it deviates HEAVILY from the novel

A biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature don't apply. Annihilation stars Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaacs, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson and Gina Rodriguez. It is directed by and written by Alex Garland based off of a novel by Jeff VanderMeer
