If you haven’t watched the Netflix Original American Vandal, you need to stop what you’re doing and watch it right now. It’s a spoof of true crime documentaries and podcasts like Serial. But don’t let the fact that it’s a spoof fool you. It’s a top notch production and while the subject matter is funny and ridiculous, it’s treated seriously (which makes it even funnier).
American Vandal follows the case of Dylan Maxwell, a High School student accused of spraying 27 dicks onto 27 faculty cars in the parking lot of a High School. Dylan is a known pranker, loves drawing dicks on white boards and is generally known for being a pain in the ass loser. But he swears he didn’t do it. Peter Maldonado, a fellow student, decides to create a documentary on the case to find out the truth. What follows is eight episodes that delve into the conspiracy theories, lies and what actually happened.
The series is surprisingly gripping and has several twists and turns like a real true crimes documentary out to find the truth. It also delves into serious topics like stereotyping, teachers being trusted even if they shouldn’t be, the cost of false accusations and other things.
Each episode is about 30 minutes or less except for the finale which is about 40 minutes. It’s well worth checking out.
